In its current form, the tobacco and vapes bill threatens the livelihoods of informal traders and takes choice away from consumers.
We can’t let that happen.

I am reaching out to you as an informal trader. Soon, you and your colleagues will begin reviewing the Tobacco and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill. Across South Africa, many citizens have raised concerns about this Bill, and I share their worries. For me, the greatest risk is the way it targets informal traders like myself.

When the GNU was established, every party promised to prioritise jobs. I believed that promise applied to mine as well. Yet the Bill would leave me facing heavy fines, or even prison, if I continue to trade. I would be forced to stop working—hurting not only my family, but also driving others into the illegal market. That illegal market has already grown more than threefold since 2018, feeding crime and corruption.

On 29 May, you and your committee pledged to “strike a balance between public health and economic impact.” I ask you to stand by that pledge and make the necessary changes to the Bill.
